Course Overview:
Our Medication Competency Refresher Short Course, delivered by a registered nurse covers the basics of administering medications, providing participants with the skills and knowledge required to assist in the administration of prescribed medications from a dose administration aid, such as a Webster Pack or Sachet. Our course includes online theory components that must be completed prior to the face-to-face practical. Please note that this is a mandatory requirement and failure to complete the theory assessment will result in unsuccessful completion of the course.
Through role-play activities, class discussions, case studies, and examinations, participants will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to participate in providing and assisting in the distribution and administration of medicines. Upon completion of this course, participants will be classified as Medical Competent Worker (MCW) and will receive a Certificate of Attainment.
We have a comprehensive yet informal assessment tools, stay up to date with the latest practices and techniques in administering medications.
Learning Outcomes:
- To administer medications safely and correctly in accordance with Best Practice, legislative and regulatory requirements
- Never being involved in the management and/or administration of consumer medication, beyond MCW skills and training e.g.:
- Never providing medication advice or information to clients/residents/ participants /representatives.
- Ensuring MCW are competent to provide medication support to clients/residents/ participants (including OTC medicines).
- Feeling confident in performing the client’s/resident’s/participant’s medication assistance required of them
- Being adequately trained to identify potential adverse effects medication may have on the patients (within a MCW’s knowledge and skill).
- Liaising with their supervisor/Registered Nurse regarding medication support as required.
- Following all medication support policies, procedures and practices in accordance with organisation’s policy and procedure.
- Providing medication support as per the medication plan/chart/profile
- Reporting any medication incidents using the appropriate Incident Report Form

This is refresher training. All participants must have previous knowledge and skills associated with the principles of Medication and work-related tasks.
